What is IS‑2026
  • IS 2026 is the Indian Standard titled “Power Transformers” (multiple parts) which lays down design, construction, testing, and performance requirements for oil‑immersed (liquid‑immersed) power and distribution transformers.

  • There are also related standards: IS 1180 (for distribution transformers), IS 335 (for transformer oil), etc. These complement IS 2026.

Key Features / Construction as per IS‑2026 and Common Industry Practice

Here are the usual components and features of oil‑cooled transformers meeting IS 2026:

ComponentDescription / Requirement
Core Built from cold‑rolled, grain‑oriented silicon steel laminations. Stamped sheets. Coated/insulated to resist oil and high temperature. Core limbs bound tightly; proper yokes; mechanical clamping to avoid vibration and core losses.
Windings High‐tension (HT) and low‐tension (LT) windings. Usually cylindrical / helical for LT; paper‑covered conductors; sometimes disc type for large ratings. Insulation between turns and layers per relevant impulse withstand levels. Spacers and support to hold windings rigid.
Insulation Use of pressboard, kraft paper, etc. For oil impregnation. Insulation must be rated for thermal stresses and aging. Oil used must comply with IS 335 (mineral oil) or other approved insulating fluids (like synthetic/natural esters) if agreed.
Oil / Insulating Liquid Mineral insulating oil is standard. Must meet dielectric strength, viscosity, flash & fire point, chemical properties as per IS 335. In some newer / eco designs, ester oil or other fluid may be used. First filling, oil sampling, pre‑testing. Oil also used to cool and insulate.
Cooling System Natural oil circulation (ONAN) is common for many distribution and medium sized power transformers. For larger ratings, forced cooling (forced oil, forced air), radiators, corrugated tanks, etc. Temperature rise limits are prescribed.
Tap Changers / Tappings OCTC or OLTC depending on requirement. Taps to allow adjustment for voltage variation. Commonly ±5% in steps of 2.5% or similar.


Temperature Rise Limits The standard prescribes limits for winding temperature (by resistance method) and top oil temperature (by thermometer) for given cooling mode (e.g., ONAN). For many ratings (e.g. common distribution transformers), winding rise ≈ 40‑50 °C, top oil ≈ 35‑45 °C, etc., depending on voltage class and rating. 
Losses (No‐load & Load Losses) Must be within prescribed limits. IS standards give maximum permissible values. Manufacturers strive for low core loss (no‑load loss) and lower load loss to improve efficiency. Sometimes star rating levels or efficiency classes are defined.

KAY PEE 's liquid-filled transformers are manufactured in accordance with the most demanding industry and international standards. Transformers can be used for indoor or outdoor applications and can be provided with off-load and on-load tap changers.

The transformer are manufactured in accordance with IS 2026/1977, IS 1180/2016, IEC 60076 or as per customer’s custom requirement.

The transformers will be suitable for outdoor installation with three phase, 50Hz, 11 kV system in which the neutral is effectively earthed and theyshould be suitable for service with fluctuations in supply voltage up to plus 12.5% to minus 12.5%.


Range :
The standard ratings shall be 250, 315, 400, 500, 630, 800, 1000, 1250, 1500, 1600, 2000 and 2500 KVA for 11 kV distribution transformers.


Vector Group
: As percustomer’s custom requirement.

Core :
The core shall be stack / wound type of high grade cold rolled grain oriented annealed steel lamination having low loss and good grain properties, coated with hot oil proof insulation, bolted together and to the frames firmly to prevent vibration or noise.

Core Test
: The preliminary core loss test will be conducted before passing to the assembly stage.

Winding :
HV and LV windings shall be wound from Super Enamel covered /Double Paper covered, aluminum /copper conductor/ foil.

Tapings :
For ratings higher than 250 kVA, tapping shall be provided if required by the purchaser on the higher voltage winding for variation of HV voltage within range of (+) 5.0 % to (-)15.0 % in steps of 2.5%.

OIL :
The insulating oil shall comply with the requirements of IS 335 or BS 148 Oil shall be filtered and tested for break down voltage (BDV) and moisture content before filling. The oil shall be filled under vacuum.

Tank :
The transformer tank is of robust construction rectangular in shape and shall be built up of electrically tested welded mild steel plates of thickness of 6 mm for top and bottom and 4 mm side plate.

Conservator :
The capacity of a conservator tank is designed keeping in Observation the total quantity of oil and its contraction and expansion due to temperature variations The total volume of conservator shall be such as to contain10% quantity of the oil. Normally 3% quantity the oil shall be contained in the conservator.

BUSHINGS:
for 11 kV, 17.5 kV class bushings and for 0.433 kV, 1.1 kV class bushings shall be used.

Transformers can be used for indoor or outdoor applications and can be provided with off-load and on-load tap changers. 

The transformer are manufactured in accordance with IS 2026/1977, IS 1180/2016, IEC 60076 or as per customer’s custom requirement.

The transformers will be suitable for outdoor installation with three phase, 50Hz, 11 kV system in which the neutral is effectively earthed and theyshould be suitable for service with fluctuations in supply voltage up to plus 12.5% to minus 12.5%.


Range :
 The standard ratings shall be 250, 315, 400, 500, 630, 800, 1000, 1250, 1500, 1600, 2000 and 2500 KVA for 11 kV distribution transformers.


Vector Group 
As per customer’s custom requirement.

Core :
 The core shall be stack / wound type of high grade cold rolled grain oriented annealed steel lamination having low loss and good grain properties, coated with hot oil proof insulation, bolted together and to the frames firmly to prevent vibration or noise.

Core Test 
The preliminary core loss test will be conducted before passing to the assembly stage.

Winding : 
HV and LV windings shall be wound from Super Enamel covered /Double Paper covered, aluminum /copper conductor/ foil.

Tapings : 
For ratings higher than 250 kVA, tapping shall be provided if required by the purchaser on the higher voltage winding for variation of HV voltage within range of (+) 5.0 % to (-)15.0 % in steps of 2.5%.

OIL :
 The insulating oil shall comply with the requirements of IS 335 or BS 148 Oil shall be filtered and tested for break down voltage (BDV) and moisture content before filling. The oil shall be filled under vacuum.

Tank :
The transformer tank is of robust construction rectangular in shape and shall be built up of electrically tested welded mild steel plates of thickness of 6 mm for top and bottom and 4 mm side plate.

Conservator : 
The capacity of a conservator tank is designed keeping in Observation the total quantity of oil and its contraction and expansion due to temperature variations The total volume of conservator shall be such as to contain10% quantity of the oil. Normally 3% quantity the oil shall be contained in the conservator.

BUSHINGS:
 for 11 kV, 17.5 kV class bushings and for 0.433 kV, 1.1 kV class bushings shall be used.

The standard ratings shall be 250, 315, 400, 500, 630, 800, 1000, 1250, 1500, 1600, 2000 and 2500 KVA for 11 kV distribution transformers.


Vector Group
: As per customer’s custom requirement.

Core :
The core shall be stack / wound type of high grade cold rolled grain oriented annealed steel lamination having low loss and good grain properties, coated with hot oil proof insulation, bolted together and to the frames firmly to prevent vibration or noise.

Core Test
: The preliminary core loss test will be conducted before passing to the assembly stage.

Winding :
HV and LV windings shall be wound from Super Enamel covered /Double Paper covered, aluminum /copper conductor/ foil.

Tapings :
For ratings higher than 250 kVA, tapping shall be provided if required by the purchaser on the higher voltage winding for variation of HV voltage within range of (+) 5.0 % to (-)15.0 % in steps of 2.5%.

OIL :
The insulating oil shall comply with the requirements of IS 335 or BS 148 Oil shall be filtered and tested for break down voltage (BDV) and moisture content before filling. The oil shall be filled under vacuum.

Tank :
The transformer tank is of robust construction rectangular in shape and shall be built up of electrically tested welded mild steel plates of thickness of 6 mm for top and bottom and 4 mm side plate.

Conservator :
The capacity of a conservator tank is designed keeping in Observation the total quantity of oil and its contraction and expansion due to temperature variations The total volume of conservator shall be such as to contain10% quantity of the oil. Normally 3% quantity the oil shall be contained in the conservator.

BUSHINGS:

The core shall be stack / wound type of high grade cold rolled grain oriented annealed steel lamination having low loss and good grain properties, coated with hot oil proof insulation, bolted together and to the frames firmly to prevent vibration or noise.

Core Test
: The preliminary core loss test will be conducted before passing to the assembly stage.

Winding :
HV and LV windings shall be wound from Super Enamel covered /Double Paper covered, aluminum /copper conductor/ foil.

Tapings :
For ratings higher than 250 kVA, tapping shall be provided if required by the purchaser on the higher voltage winding for variation of HV voltage within range of (+) 5.0 % to (-)15.0 % in steps of 2.5%.
